A child support agreement is very common, in fact it is an unavoidable part of having a child. The court is forced to make one, as any other type of agreement would be absurd. A child support agreement is made based on the income of both parents, and how they spend that money. In many cases the child support amount is quite low, and in other cases it can be quite high. It all depends on the financial situation of the custodial parent and the non-custodial parent.
There are a lot of different things that can be included in a child support agreement. Most commonly they will include but not be limited to, the following: particulars about when payments will be made; who has the custody and control of the children; what forms of medical care are covered; what kind of education the child will get; what kind of religion or spiritual beliefs of the child is allowed to practice; and of course, the amount of child support to be paid. Child support agreements can be quite vague, especially since they are designed for situations that often do not occur in every case. They will need to be carefully prepared by both parents.

Unfortunately there are also instances where the verbal agreements are not adhered to. This can happen when the child or children involved are teenagers. Since they are adults, and not minors, they can legally end the verbal agreement. At this point there needs to be some sort of court order specifying what has to be done. Another reason that verbal child support agreements may not be followed through is if the custodial parent is in a financial situation where he/she does not have enough money to pay the child support. In these cases it may be necessary for the court to require the custodial parent to go to work.

There are a couple of ways to make a reasonable estimation of how much should be paid. First you can ask each parent what their annual salary is and add two to three times that amount. Then multiply that by the number of children to be cared for. For example, if it is common knowledge that there are seven children involved, then you could expect to pay about forty-five thousand dollars a year in child support. This works out to about two-hundred grand a year.
