Browning and the Dead

Lecture: Dr Francis O’Gorman (University of Leeds)

Dr O’Gorman, Lecturer at the University of Leeds and author of many wonderful books on Victorian literature, will speak about the poet Robert Browning, a volume of whose Collected Poems he is editing, and raise spirits by conjuring the fascinating shades of Victorian literary thought about death and the afterlife.

Lecture: Professor Michael O’Neill (University of Durham)

This year’s George Jack Memorial Lecture is given by Professor Michael O’Neill, one of the UK’s foremost scholars of Romanticism and of modern poetry. His lecture promises to bring together these two areas of expertise in a magical and revealing marriage.

Making a Career as a Dramatist

Discussion: Rachel Wagstaff (Old Vic Young Writers Programme)

Rachel Wagstaff graduated from the School of English at St Andrews in 2002. Her first play, ‘The Soldier’, about the life of poet Rupert Brooke, received rave reviews at the Edinburgh Festival and led to her securing a place as one of seven ‘New Voices’, whose talents are being developed by the Old Vic, where she recently saw her play ‘Night Sky’ premiered by a star-studded cast. Come and hear her tips and reflections on launching a career as a dramatist.

Masterclass and Discussion: Anne Wroe, Martin Stannard, Ken Johnston, Janice Galloway

In the first of an innovative series of Masterclasses in the School of English, four distinguished writers will talk about the craft of biography.

 

Dr Anne Wroe, author of biographies of Pontius Pilate and Perkin Warbeck, will talk about ‘Searching for Shelley’.
Professor Kenneth Johnston, author of The Hidden Wordsworth, will talk on ‘Unusual Suspects: Biography of a Lost Generation’;
Professor Martin Stannard, biographer of Evelyn Waugh, will talk about ‘The Executor Over Your Shoulder: Waugh and Estate Management’.
Janice Galloway, author of the novel Clara, which recreates the life of Clara Schumann will discuss fictionalised biography. Come, pose questions, and join in the debate.

 

 

W. B. Yeats, D.H. Lawrence, and the Experience of Italy

Lecture: Professor Peter Vassallo (University of Malta)

Professor Vassallo, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Malta, is a specialist in the history of cultural relations between the UK and Italy and the author of books on Byron and the influence of Italian Literature. Here he turns his attention to Italy in the lives and works of two equally charismatic modernists.

 

Negotiating Keats: Of Coughs, Graves and Corpses

Lecture: Dr Christoph Ehland (Würzburg University)

Dr Ehland is Lecturer in English Literature and Cultural History at the University of Würzburg, Germany. He has interests in picaresque and Scottish fiction, and in the image of the writer at different historical moments; he has recently published a book on Lewis Grassic Gibbon. In this lecture he will discuss posthumous transformations of the image of the Romantic poet, Keats.
